Health and airport the priorities of Governor Mung'aro

Meeting with civil society: 'we will enhance tourism'

Upgrading the infrastructure around the international airport is one of the priorities of the new governor of Kilifi County, Gideon Mung'aro. He announced this himself during a meeting organised by all stakeholders in Malindi, entrepreneurs, associations, civil society and private citizens at the Ocean Beach Resort.

"I had the honour of being hosted for a thank you dinner by the Malindi business community, with whom I have worked closely for over three decades," Mung'aro wrote on his social profiles. "My administration remains committed to the implementation of some of the specific issues highlighted this evening, including enhancing the infrastructure at the Malindi International Airport, developing an international convention centre to boost tourism, enhancing waste management, improving general infrastructure and drainage, and developing a beach management policy.
Tourism cannot fail to be one of the main thoughts of the new governor, who is well aware of the territory's potential in this respect and the inducement that good management and promotion of entry and stays in holiday destinations can bring for the local population and the administration itself, in the form of taxes and foreign currency in cash.

In the preceding days, however, Mung'aro spoke of public health issues as an immediate priority for his government. The facilities in Kilifi and Malindi have deteriorated in recent times, with articles even appearing in the national media denouncing the situation at the sub-district hospital in Malindi, with some patients even being forced to share beds.
Mung'aro will dedicate himself to this and also to implementing specialisation courses to improve the quality of staff, through agreements with Pwani University in Kilifi, which was recently accredited to offer training in medicine and related studies.
Finally, the governor also promised the construction of an international sports complex that will strengthen sports tourism and talent development.

"In return, I asked for the continued support of the business community, challenging them to be innovative in developing new products that will make Kilifi more attractive in the global market, as we only have 13 starred hotels out of over 400," concluded Mung'aro.
