Ruto: no more visa for Kenya from January

President announces abolition of entry fees

12-12-2023 by redazione

The statement by Kenya's president, William Ruto, if it is indeed confirmed by the national immigration office, is the kind of momentous one that Kenya's tourism industry has long been hoping for: the country is moving towards the abolition of entry visas for travellers from all over the world, and there is even a date, from the words of the Kenyan leader himself, spoken live on television during the Republic Day celebrations: January 2024.
"From January 2024, Kenya will be a visa-free country.

It will no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the world to bear the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya,' Ruto said bluntly, announcing in the morning that his government had decided to abolish visa requirements for all global visitors. It will thus be the second nation on the continent, after Rwanda which had already abolished visas last November, to adopt such a policy.

And to say that the premise on the part of its Ministry of the Interior had been of an entirely different nature. In fact, in a notice in the Official Gazette, Minister Kithure Kindiki had predicted a doubling of tourist visa fees from next year, from the current $50 to $100.
Ruto, however, overturned this decision, pointing out that the abolition is part of the adoption of globalisation and the opening of borders to stimulate the country's socio-economic development.

He further stated that to implement this new policy, a digital platform has been developed to ensure that all travellers to Kenya are electronically identified in advance and are recognised on arrival, as reported by local media. Ruto specified that visitors themselves will have to identify themselves on an electronic platform to obtain authorisation.
