Kenyan President William Ruto has decided to depart from the coast
to relaunch his government's plans, after recent protests
by young people who have questioned his first two years of
administration and especially criticised the proposals in the new
financial law full of taxes that would have weighed on the poor
people.
Ruto visited Kilifi County and then the county
of Mombasa, landing with his helicopter in Watamu, where he was
received by, among others, the Italian entrepreneur Roberto Lenzi and
by his son Riccardo.
There are many projects that Ruto has
promised for the coastal regions, where the opposition party has
always played a significant role, starting with the presence of the
governor of Kilifi, Gideon Mung'aro. Ruto however, in the reshuffle of
government recently, again as a consequence of the
generation Z street demonstrations, included four
ministers taken from the ranks of the main party of the
opposition alliance, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), so the scenarios
could quickly change, as could future alliances on the
coastal region.
Among the projects that the president has
announced is the construction of the fruit and vegetable market in
Watamu, the construction of which he inaugurated, laying the foundation stone
of a 50 million shilling project.
With him was the
Mung'aro himself, who also assisted with donations for fishermen,
as well as promising assistance for agriculture and ensuring the
involvement in government activities of the former MP from
Malindi, Aisha Jumwa, who was torpedoed from her role as minister.
A
Mombasa, Ruto was received positively, especially for
having brought into his government the former governor, beloved by the local
local population, Hassan Joho.
In Mombasa, Ruto secured
projects for the Blie Economy, which are part of agreements with the
European Union.
"This is the right time to unite Kenyans and
focus on creating jobs and businesses for
our people,’ he said, adding that he was confident that
Joho will work well with him. Ruto, who has stated that he will
keep the promises made in the election campaign, pointed out
that the government recently authorised the first deep-sea
Kenyan-flagged deep-sea industrial vessel, with a capacity
of 10,000 tonnes of fish per year.
Ruto has ordered
the purchase of 25 deep-sea fishing vessels over the next four months, worth
worth 600 million shillings, in order to promote fishing
in the Indian Ocean, adding that the government has recently
purchased 123 small boats for fishermen in the region
of the Coast.
Regarding
the war on corruption, President Ruto said the law
will be changed to ensure that fraud cases are concluded within
six months and to ensure heavy penalties.
"We are also
tackling tax expenditure to ensure the servicing of our
debts,’ he said.
In addition, Ruto launched the
4 billion water works in the Malindi constituency. The
project will provide 40 million litres of extra water per day to
over 400,000 households in Kilifi and Mombasa counties.
