SOLIDARITY

Alice was a girl with exceptional strength, accustomed to challenges since she was a child. She was living with a crippling juvenile form of rheumatoid arthritis, anyone who advised her against sporting activity. Yet not only did she become passionate about the game of tambourine, she became world champion in the indoor speciality. On each of the tambourines she competed with, there was the inscription 'believe it'. Not only that, Alice Magnani, originally from the Trentino region of Italy, spent her time raising funds for children born with the same illness as her.
For her commitment and dedication, her willingness to go beyond the limits imposed by fate and her sporting achievements, Alice was also honoured by Coni President Giovanni Malagò in Rome.
In May 2015, Alice was the victim of a car accident. Her will and her dreams were shattered at only 22 years old.
But today, seven years later, one of those wishes has come true, thanks to the association set up by her father Dino, many of Alice's friends and compatriots and the Camillian fathers of the mission hospital in Tabaka, Kenya.
"Alice dreamed of one day being able to travel to Africa and help people in need," says Massimo Gabbani, a member of the Tabaka Mission Hospital's Friends association.
She was physically unable to do so, but the paediatrics ward of the hospital, in Kisii County not far from Lake Victoria, completed thanks to donations that arrived in her daughter's name, is now dedicated to her.
On Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July, on the occasion of the family feast, a sports memorial has been organised in memory of Alice, in which some 200 children from Tabaka schools will participate, with volleyball and football matches, and also a fashion show.
"It is an opportunity to bring Kenyan children closer to sport," explains Gabbani, "in the spirit that characterised the young champion, who through sporting activity faced the challenges that life had imposed on her and overcame obstacles, inviting others to do the same.
