The long hot summer on the Kenyan coast

Rising temperatures, what the weathermen say

29-12-2023 by redazione

The old nostalgic saying, 'there are no longer any half seasons' has never suited the Kenyan coast.
Here, there have always been only two seasons: wet and dry. Identified with the two main winds, the monsoon Kusi and the hot Kaskazi.
The change of season is heralded by the onset of the big and small rains, usually in April and October.

But for some years now, due to climate change around the world, and for Kenya in particular also deforestation and ocean warming, there is no longer a reference.
The equatorial belt, too, is travelling towards tropicalisation. Humidity increases and the dry season decreases, resulting in higher temperatures and the possibility of unseasonal downpours.

This year, then, the El Niñp cyclone has brought unstable weather situations that are still lingering, with some rain showers at night and the humidity unable to fall below 75%.
Translated into sensation for those who frequent tourist resorts at this time, this means great heat, which certainly pleases those who come from western countries that are in the middle of winter (even if in Italy the temperatures are still not so cold) and benefits the tan, as well as the many seaside activities.

A little less so, perhaps, for those who love to move around and see places, safaris (where, however, it is always recommended to visit the savannah in the very early hours of the day and after 4pm) and land excursions, such as the ruins of Gede or, above all, the Marafa canyon, not by chance nicknamed 'the kitchens of hell'.
This year, the Kenyan Meteorological Service has forecast summer temperatures a few degrees higher than last year, although it is preparing for the arrival of some wind that will improve the situation.

For lovers of heat, this is a cakewalk. For those who prefer the breeze in the shade of a palm tree, there is a bit of suffering. But it is always worth it.
According to the weathermen, the first week of the year may still bring with it a mischievous disturbance, with some drizzle, but in general the weather will be fine and the heat bearable.
Happy Kenyan holidays!
