Another horrific accident shocks Kenya in the holiday season.
At least 24 people died after a Mombasa-bound bus they were travelling on plunged into the Nithi River along the Meru-Nairobi highway on Sunday evening.
The bus, which was travelling from Meru, fell off the bridge and into the river bed, after a flight of about 40 metres.
The bodies of the passengers were thrown onto the river bank and scattered in the water. Tharaka Nithi County Rescue Team Leader Alex Mugambi confirmed the victims to local media, after conducting rescue operations at the scene together with police and members of the public. The injured were rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital and PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital.
Those who witnessed the 6.40pm accident said the bus may have experienced brake failure as it descended the slope towards Nithi locality. An eyewitness, as reported by the Daily Nation newspaper, said the bus was at high speed when it hit the guard rail and fell into the river.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the scene of the accident, and the total number of victims may rise, as it is feared that some are still trapped in the sheets of the vehicle.
