Freddie's monologue gets off to a good start in Nairobi

Participation and applause for "A (semi-serious) history of Italians in Kenya

09-06-2025 by Leni Frau

It was a successful evening in every way: the turnout, the show, the beautifully decorated venue, the cuisine of the restaurant ‘La Cantina’ and the camaraderie among fellow countrymen, many of whom did not know each other.
The glue that held it all together was not only the premiere of Freddie del Curatolo's monologue "Storia (semiseria) degli italiani in Kenya (A (semi-serious) history of Italians in Kenya, but also the atmosphere of the Shalom House and the helpfulness of the organisers, Chiara Natali, wife of the ambassador, and Annita Serventi, the driving force behind the culinary projects of the Shalom House restaurant and bakery, which employs young people from the slums, teaches them a trade and employs them while they wait for better accommodation.
In short, if the aim of the evening was to help street children, around forty people responded enthusiastically to the appeal, and it was also good to know that many who were unable to attend still donated their contribution to the show and dinner.

Then there was the event itself, which was met with applause and laughter for its irony, but also moments of silent attention for Freddie's historical accounts, which skilfully blended moments of “Alberto Angela of Kenya” with cabaret, emotional poems and even scathing readings, accompanied by apt background music. A solo show, for once without musicians on stage, which can only get better if there are opportunities for other evenings. In the meantime, well done!
