Watamu, Malindi: come back to life

For a difficult but necessary tourist season

08-07-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

Sometimes they come back.

For the tourist destinations of the Kenyan coast, and in particular Watamu and Malindi, which in a time not too long ago were used to large numbers, the wait for the new-found tourist season is more than just a hope.

It is a long-simmering need, prepared for in the very slow recovery after the end of the pandemic reopening, unhappily mitigated again by the war in Ukraine and the new economic crisis. In the midst of this reality and the human being's need to regain a high sense of existence, there is the great narrative of Africa. The one that suffers like any current story, but that is not suffocated by the perverse logic of economics, climate change, and social tensions. Kenya, one of the continent's most solid and credible representatives, we do not yet know for how long, is holding its own. It is not just from a lack of tourists, but from a drought unparalleled in the last 58 years, from inflation that is making those who have been on their knees for some time crawl to the ground. In spite of this desperate situation, which is the natural downward projection of what is happening all over the world, the wonders of Kenya await the arrival of those who can enjoy them, if only for a time that will inevitably seem very short and that, we bet, will make you fall in love.

Never as this year, for those dreaming of a holiday between sea and safari, in the enchantment of equatorial Africa, this marriage is a must.
Who knows what else the long western winter has in store for us, it is really worth not thinking about it and diving into the Malindi and Watamu dimension and taking a bath in that other reality, the one that is not written in the newspapers and not shouted on Twitter, the one that could easily do without the ego-frenetic frustration of tik-tok and sharing.

Try walking into the ocean at low tide, being carried away by the whispers of the wind and feeling part of that enormous blue that passes through you. Leave your mobile phone in the room and look around, breathe for yourself, regretting that you are enough.

You cannot take a selfie of your nervous system, nor tag a shiver of pleasure. Kenya on holiday is something that feels good inside you, contemplating the deep truth of what is around you.
It is, it can be, it must be life rediscovered.
