Between boosters and election: here's Kenyavax 2022

How health security is growing in the country

03-01-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

With the start of the new year, Kenya proceeds, perhaps not very fast, towards the flanking of Western countries in the procedures for the protection of its citizens.
From today, in most of Kenya, we start with the so-called "booster" or the third booster doses of the vaccine against Covid-19, for those who have received the second dose at least six months ago.
It 'was the President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta in person to set a good example, getting vaccinated with the third dose of Modern and immortalize in front of the White House in Nairobi.
With him also the president of the Supreme Court of Kenya, Martha Koome.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has released data on national vaccinations that are not quite in line with what was predicted and promised for the end of 2021. The Minister Mutahi Kagwe had repeatedly assured that at the end of the year in Kenya would be fully vaccinated 10 million citizens. Now the figure that comes closest to this number and that still allows a certain optimism, speaks of 9 million and 700 thousand doses used, but the number of those who are fully vaccinated is less than 5 million.
Meanwhile, increasing local hotels and restaurants especially, which at the entrance require the certificate of the complete cycle of vaccination to customers, as a preliminary access.
In recent days in some clubs and shopping centers in the capital Nairobi there have also been disputes that led to fights, fortunately without serious consequences.
However, statistics show that vaccinated people are those who travel the most and can afford to attend certain places and facilities, certainly this year we will see an important split between two types of Kenyans. The risk in this country is that the vaccine and consequently the Covid Pass is in fact a social and economic thermometer that divides citizens into the aware and included in the productive and growing fabric of Kenya, and the poor and despite themselves separated from the system-Kenya and increasingly marginalized.
But there is something that can come back to reason with the national leadership: in the end, vaccinated or not, the poor who are in the majority, are still voters and in what is ultimately a democracy, they will choose the next leader, at the polls in August 2022.
In a few months, political rallies will rage: will only vaccinated people be able to enter the squares and parks of the country? We have our doubts.
In a nutshell, we're going to see more of the same, and not entirely predictable.
