Covid-19, now more deaths in Kenya than in Italy

The Covid-19 positivity rate is rising in Kenya as the tourist season approaches.
The country recorded 550 new cases of coronavirus on Monday 26 July out of 4087 swabs taken and regularly reported, a rate of 13.5 per cent.
Kenya's official positives have thus almost reached 200,000 (197,959) out of just over 2 million tests carried out (2,097,101).
ewer people are now dying from Covid-19, but admissions to intensive care are increasing, and this is undoubtedly also due to vaccination coverage, which in Kenya is still stuck at 2.3% and progressing at a tortoise's pace. If this rate were to continue, with 0.1% covered every 24 hours, it would take about 19 months to reach the target of 60% of vaccinated citizens. Recently, the Ministry of Health indicated that June 2022 would be a good month to vaccinate more than half the country.
Seven deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of official deaths to 3872.
The number of patients in intensive care units has also risen, to 172, 37 of whom are on ventilator support and 84 on supplementary oxygen. 29 patients are under observation. Another 398 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen, with 352 of them in general wards and 46 in high-dependency units.
Meanwhile, 786 patients have recovered from the disease, 738 of them were part of the home isolation care programme while 48 were admitted from various health facilities across the country. Nairobi is still the city with the most cases, but also with the most swabs performed. The first county among those not adjacent to the capital is still Kilifi. Yesterday 24 positives were reported.
