BAD WEATHER

Hopefully today's is the last tragic bulletin of the season in Kenya. Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura has in fact updated to 142 the number of victims of the violent flooding brought by Cyclone El Niño in the country for the past three weeks.
Since last weekend, the sun has returned to shine over much of the country, leaving, however, in addition to the trail of deaths, also a great deal of damage, starting with roads still disrupted by floods and overflowing rivers, as well as collapsed trees (the latest in the series, one of the tallest and most historic, in the centre of Malindi, Uhuru Garden, known to all as the 'change square'), electricity pylons to be put back up and other disasters for which the counties are still waiting for funds, in an endless dispute with Nairobi.
Meanwhile, military aircraft and parachutes have been deployed to assist in urgent airlifting and dropping food and non-food items into inaccessible areas, Mwaura himself reported, saying that strong winds are now the new enemy in the Rift Valley highlands and on the coast, as well as in the Garissa area in the east of the country.
There is also no peace in the refugee camps, which have filled up with new displaced persons and entire families left homeless and who have lost the little or nothing they already had.
According to the Red Cross, more than 60,000 families are affected and 452,000 people are in distress throughout Kenya.
As for roads, after reopening the Mombasa-Kilifi and Ukunda-Lungalunga (border with Tanzania), the national highways authority (KENHA) has confirmed that the Malindi-Lamu road will still be closed for works, following the flooding of the Tana river basin.
