If it is true that monkeypox comes from Africa, this new epidemic that recalls the Covid-19 bogeyman, albeit with many differences and with more immediate possibilities of recognition and cure, has already taken root in Europe as well.
After the first official case registered in Sweden and the Scandinavian authorities confirming the likelihood of further future contagions, it is feared not only a pandemic, but that the entire pharmaceutical and health care system will set in motion its preventive, vaccination and so on machine.
The ‘Mpox Clade I’ variant appears to be the most dangerous of a viral infection that would otherwise be categorised as the most debilitating of the so-called ‘childhood diseases’, thus not dissimilar to common smallpox. In recent days, the African Union has raised the alarm, calling the situation on the continent a ‘health emergency’.
Since January 2022, more than 38,000 cases of Mpox have been recorded in 16 African countries, with 1,456 deaths. So far this year, according to data published by Africa Cdc, the health department of the African Union, the increase over the previous year is 160%. ‘Mpox has now crossed borders, affecting thousands of people across our continent,’ said Africa Cdc president Jean Kasenya, as reported by Afp, ‘we are declaring it a continental public health emergency’. After the African nations, the World Health Organisation issued a pandemic alert on Wednesday, in turn declaring a ‘global health emergency’ following the outbreak of monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where 548 people have died this year.
In this regard, it should be noted that Kenya, which is not a neighbouring country to Congo, has only recorded one case and that it was not a Kenyan citizen, but a Ugandan traveller in transit, on the border with Tanzania, who recovered after a few days. It was later reported in the media that another 12 people were under observation for symptoms related to Mpox, but the Ministry of Health denied this, stating that none of them were infected.
This is also recalled by the Kenya Tourist Federation, in a communiqué which, while recalling the symptoms and effects of the infection and the precautions to be taken, reiterates that Kenya to date is a safe destination from the point of view of the danger of contagion, despite being in sub-Saharan Africa. In any case, KTF recalls that health checks at border entry points, both airports and land customs, have increased.
