President Ruto launched his first government

Twenty-two ministers were sworn in, including seven women

28-10-2022 by redazione

Earlier in the day yesterday, Kenyan President Willian Ruto officially launched his first government. He did so at State House in Nairobi by presenting his 22 ministers, plus Chief of Staff Musalia Mudavadi, a former vice president 20 years ago during the Mwai Kibaki administration, of which Ruto himself was a minister, and Attorney General Justin Muturi. The ministers were sworn in and will be formally sworn into their offices starting Monday.
Among the familiar faces in national politics is former Kibaki government spokesman and former Machakos governor Alfred Mutua, who has been appointed foreign minister, while the head of Ruto's legal team, who defended the former vice president at the time of his trial for crimes against humanity at the International Court in The Hague, Kithure Kindiki, will have the important duties of interior minister.
Other loyalists of the new Kenyan leader are Kipchumba Murkomen (Transportation), Aden Duale (of Somali origin, at Defense), Ababu Namwamba, one of Ruto's most listened to advisers on international policy, but who has been diverted to Sports. Only one member of Uhuru Kenyatta's administration has been retained in the cabinet, though changing job title. This is Simon Chelugui, the former Minister of Labor who is now in charge of the Ministry of Cooperatives.
Of note, the new Kenyan government has appointed seven women out of 22 to head a ministry, doing better in this area than the Meloni administration in Italy (only 6 out of 24). Among them is former Power & Lightning CEO Rebecca Miano and former Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, whose appointment was opposed by the opposition because she is still on trial on charges of conspiracy to commit murder for events dating back to 2019. The newly appointed Minister of Tourism, Peninah Malonza, also risked having her nomination rejected. The parliamentary committee in the first instance ruled negatively on her, reasoning that she was "unfamiliar with the issues of her ministry." Later, however, the committee revised its views and Malonza was able to be sworn in. The tourism business sector expects much from the change of leadership at the ministry.
