Tourism in Kenya from Italy, one more week to know

Waiting and hoping, hundreds of compatriots ready to come

18-10-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

One more week of passion for hundreds of Italian tourists who can't wait to go (and for many it wouldn't be the first time) to Kenya.
The now fateful date of the next modification of the Decree of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, known by the acronym to which we are now accustomed a year and a half, DPCM, is set for next Monday, October 25. But, as has often happened in the past, the most important anticipations could already be had between Friday and Saturday.
The fundamental one, which would change "the outlook on the world" as Franco Battiato sang, concerns the rules applied to the E band, i.e. the countries where until today it is impossible (on paper, i.e. by decree and with some exceptions) to go for tourism.
The fact that some regulars have managed to land in Kenya, dribbling controls or presenting self-certifications that somehow did not qualify them as real tourists, or feared possible recruitment, etc., has not in fact changed the situation of Italian tourism in Kenya, the suffering of hotels that work with tour operators and travel agencies and of all employees who are waiting for the official reopening to see a partial, total or seasonal salary again.
What is expected from the Italian government?
After the reopening of the so-called "covid free corridors" that particularly concern long-haul destinations that can be easily controlled and "transformed" into a bubble for tourism, with special rules starting from compulsory medical insurance, there are not high hopes that every nation of those belonging to the E band can be completely reopened, but the most likely optimistic hypotheses are two: the first is the cancellation of quarantine on return for residents and tourists belonging to the categories that are part of the exceptions (health reasons, reunification with relatives, change of residence, reasons of extraordinary urgency documentable), the second is the opening to travel for Italian citizens vaccinated, with health insurance and presenting the plan of travel and stay.
The hope is that both changes can be implemented, especially the second could open a window for hotels and the tourism industry in Malindi and Watamu. But it is also the most difficult to implement. The fact remains that departure controls have never been so strict, even if it is true that we have received direct or indirect news of compatriots who have been refused boarding and have seen their trip (and their plane ticket) go up in smoke.
In a week or probably less, we will know.
