Two different speed vaccinations in Kenya

Nairobi's going on, quite nothing in other regions

15-08-2021 by redazione

Kenya exceeds 2 million vaccinated adults, but the vaccination process is definitely traveling at two different speeds. In Nairobi, the process is proceeding at a reasonable pace, with many points of administration to the public, even without reservations. There are not only health facilities, but also pastoral centers or religious associations, meeting places and other spaces, especially in the working-class neighborhoods of the capital. In other regions of the country, however, after an initial dispatch of doses and a flattering response from the population, everything has already stopped waiting for reinforcements that are not yet arriving. Saturday, August 14, the Covax program for the African Union has announced more doses of Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine for some nations of the continent starting in the coming days. Kenya is also among the beneficiaries, although there is still no certain date of delivery, nor the number of doses that should be between 100 and 200 thousand.
With the famous, promised and hopefully kept 12 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines, which after last month's announcement by President Kenyatta have been reaffirmed by the Ministry of Health by the end of August, the situation should become fluid and fast and travel at averages well above 0.1% per day, which this week has even failed to maintain.
In the meantime, the country's public health system, with 1933 inpatients for Covid-19, is not doing well, and this must continue to make one think about how Kenya has not improved the health situation much in a year and a half, if one considers that of the many hospitals with at least 300 dedicated beds ordered by the Government and recommended to the Governors of the individual counties, very few have approached that quota.
Thus, with 131 patients in intensive care units and another 69 on oxygen, the situation remains an emergency. The percentage of new cases compared to the number of swabs performed (more than 8000 in the last 24 hours) is 13.8%.
