For almost thirty years, the opposition in Kenya had but one face: that of Raila Odinga. Following his passing, many wondered who would carry on that legacy. Today, an increasing number of observers are pointing to one name: Edwin Watenya Sifuna, a senator for Nairobi, a lawyer, a brilliant communicator and an emerging leader with a particular ability to connect with the younger generations.

Polls currently rank him among the country’s fastest-rising politicians, and his rallies are drawing ever-larger crowds. Edwin Sifuna is not yet the opposition’s candidate, but he has already become one of the key figures in the run-up to the 2027 elections.

At forty-four, Sifuna is the outsider in Kenyan politics. Not so much because he has already secured the backing of a party or announced a presidential bid, but rather because of the speed with which he has managed to transform himself from Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) into a national figure capable of mobilising crowds and attracting the attention of analysts.

In recent months, his name has gone from being confined to the corridors of power in Nairobi to dominating the front pages of newspapers. This rise has also been fuelled by the Linda Mwananchi (“Protect the Citizen”) movement, which began as a civic initiative and has now become a genuine political platform opposing President William Ruto’s government.

Born on 22 May 1986 in Kakamega, in western Kenya, Sifuna holds a law degree from the University of Nairobi and a professional diploma from the Kenya School of Law. Before entering politics full-time, he practised as a lawyer, distinguishing himself through his ability to communicate effectively in the media and in public debates.

He first appeared on the national stage in 2013 as a Senate candidate in Kakamega County. Although defeated, he made a name for himself as one of the ODM’s most promising young leaders, eventually becoming its Secretary-General in 2018. In 2022, he won a Senate seat representing the capital, Nairobi – one of the most prestigious positions in Kenyan politics.

What is most striking is his style. Sifuna has built his popularity through direct language, well-prepared speeches and a constant presence on social media. He is considered one of the finest orators of his generation and, particularly following the death of Raila Odinga, many opposition supporters see him as the politician capable of channelling the popular discontent that for decades had found its main voice in the former Prime Minister.

The figures also seem to bear out this rise. According to the latest TIFA poll, Sifuna has risen to second place among the favourite candidates for the presidency, behind only William Ruto and ahead of far more experienced leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i. Within the ODM, he also enjoys the widest support as a potential party candidate.

This does not mean that his candidacy is now a certainty. Interviewed by Citizen TV, Sifuna avoided confirming his own bid for the presidency, explaining that the opposition’s primary objective remains to field a single candidate against Ruto, thereby avoiding the fragmentation that has previously favoured the president. He added that, should the selection process identify another candidate as more competitive, he would be prepared to support them.

It is precisely this stance that gives rise to two interpretations. The first sees Sifuna as a genuine presidential candidate, especially if his support continues to grow. The second, however, regards him as the opposition’s key ‘vote magnet’: a young, dynamic and popular figure capable of mobilising voters, particularly in the western counties and major cities, before eventually rallying behind a single, more politically experienced candidate – especially at an international level.

Meanwhile, his rise is already having political repercussions. The Kenya Kwanza governing coalition is seeking to play down his influence, arguing that he does not yet pose a real threat to Ruto’s re-election, whilst within the opposition itself, debate is growing over what role to entrust him with in the future coalition. Some envisage him as a presidential candidate, others as vice-president, and others, quite simply, as the main driving force behind the 2027 election campaign.

Whatever his political fate may be, Edwin Sifuna is already one of the most interesting figures in Kenya’s new political landscape. For the first time since the long era dominated by ‘Baba’ Odinga, the opposition seems to have found a leader capable of speaking the language of the younger generations without sacrificing the experience gained within the institutions.

It remains to be seen whether this support will translate into a presidential candidacy or whether Sifuna will opt for the perhaps even more decisive role of unifier and driving force behind an anti-Ruto coalition. In any case, between now and the 2027 elections, it will be hard to imagine Kenyan politics without his name at the centre of the debate.
