Kenya Airways inconveniences, Italians also affected

Explanations from the national airline

11-01-2023 by redazione

For the umpteenth time, Kenya's national airline, Kenya Airways, has created inconvenience for its customers and travelers who are using it these days both as a "bridge" to travel from Mombasa to Nairobi and vice versa, and as a "code-sharing" carrier with other international lines, such as Air France and KLM. Among the passengers who have been stranded, missing connections or being forced to spend the night in hotels in Nairobi without notice nor for now reimbursement, there are ancje Italians.
This time it is not the suspension of licenses, as happened a few months ago, or even the pilots' strike, which took place last November, when the company's employees went on strike for a week.
It is the Kenyan airline's CEO and managing director himself who explains why the stoppage of many domestic and international flights that left hundreds of passengers stranded or caused delays resulting in missed connections.
Here is the official statement from Kenya Airways.

We would like to inform our customers that we are experiencing some flight disruptions. These are the result of delays in the resumption of operations of our aircraft, which are undergoing scheduled maintenance, due to global problems in the supply of some aircraft components. This has limited the availability of our aircraft because we do not have additional aircraft capacity to help alleviate the delays. These problems are global and affect not only Kenya Airways but all airlines around the world.
The challenges were caused by the war crisis in Ukraine, which significantly crippled the Russian supply chain, which is critical to global aviation. The aviation supply chain depends heavily on raw materials from many countries, including Russia. For example, 100 percent of titanium used for Embraer aircraft and 35 percent for Boeing aircraft come from Russia. With limited inventory, airlines have had to search all over the world to find the parts they need.
In addition, in Europe and North America, where most airlines source parts, manufacturers are trying to increase production of aircraft parts to overcome delivery delays. However, this is proving difficult due to a shortage of skilled labor. This has exacerbated delays in supply chains and compromised the availability of components for airlines.
Right off the bat, we would like to assure our customers that we are doing everything within our control to reduce the impact of these supply chain delays on our operations. We are also proactively anticipating these delays with the intention of communicating them as soon as possible.
We are committed to and are working with our partners to find a solution that minimizes disruption and inconvenience to our customers. To that end, we are currently finalizing a component support program that will help us speed up the roll-out. We are also actively engaging our OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partners to work on mitigation measures that should ensure the continuity of our network and operations.
Should the supply chain problems persist, we may modify our flight schedules with reductions in some frequencies.
We sincerely apologize to our guests for the inconvenience, but assure them of our commitment to provide the highest level of service during this period.
