Nan, experience and 'heart in Africa' for the Senate

The programme of the centre-right candidate

04-09-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

The political profile of Ligurian lawyer Enrico Nan is of a high level: MP for four terms with Forza Italia, vice-president of the parliamentary group with many other important positions in his career. Having moved to the Arab Emirates, he has been indicated by the entire centre-right coalition, which abroad presents itself united under the 'Salvini Berlusconi Meloni' symbol, as a candidate for the Senate for the Africa Asia Oceania Antarctica division in the next Italian general election. Malindikenya.net interviewed him to find out what his priorities are in favour of his compatriots living abroad and in particular on the African continent, which we cover.
"The first intention, not only mine, but also that of Giorgia Meloni and the entire centre-right,' Nan explains, 'is to reinstate the Ministry of Italians Abroad that the Honourable Mirko Tremaglia, with the votes of us parliamentarians, had set up and of which he himself became Minister. It was the Left with Prodi that abolished the first case of representation of the pride and values of Italians in the World and of Made in Italy companies. Almost six million Italian citizens live in the World, many of them in Oceania, Africa, Asia and Antarctica. There is a need for a stronger and more present representation to make our compatriots feel more at home. Not only that, carry out some initiatives to help Italians abroad'.

In Enrico Nan's programme, in addition to the commitment to equal health dignity and embassy reform, the abolition of IMU on the first house for those who have chosen to reside abroad stands out: "For two years the tax has been changed and now those who are resident abroad have to pay IMU. Those who have had to make the choice to reside abroad or have bought a first home in Italy, after years of work, on which they now have to pay IMU unlike other Italians, have been penalised. All Italian citizens must be equal before the tax authorities'.
In Kenya, as in many other nations not only in Africa, Italian residents are still struggling with double taxation. This is a problem that cannot be solved in a unified manner, but one that must be dealt with 'on a case-by-case basis'. Enrico Nan already has clear ideas regarding Kenya, a country he knows very well.
"As soon as I am elected, I will start a friendship group between Italian and Kenyan parliamentarians, where the last elections have just taken place. I hope that the concomitance of the general elections in the two countries will be a good omen to start very close relations with a country where there is a strong Italian presence. The abolition of double taxation becomes fundamental and useful for both the Italian investor and Kenya because we would then have a greater demand for investment from the Italian side, especially in tourism. The political bilateral agreements on pensions for Italians would push many of them to not only go to Tunisia or Spain but to make choices to spend the last years of their lives in a wonderful and hospitable country like Kenya".

The Centre-Right Senate candidate's gaze is also turned to the potential of Sub-Saharan Africa.

"I believe that Africa in general and Kenya in particular represent a future for investment, not only from Italy. The world needs food development and renewable energy.
East Africa has expanses of very fertile land that for agriculture can represent a lung for Europe,' Nan says. 'Already in floriculture the existing relations with Europe are very significant. Kenya has wind and sun and is therefore suitable for investments that look towards the development of renewable energy. Italian companies are certainly very interested in these sectors and an important promotion can be made for Kenya's economic and social development'.
In the words of the former Forza Italia deputy, Kenya comes up often, a sign of a certain 'Africa-sickness' that has a precise motivation.

'It's true,' Nan admits, 'my wife and I were struck by the African sickness in 2006 and bought a villa in Galu Kinondo that we christened 'the most beautiful place in the world'. Actually, I would have liked to spend much more time there already. It means that if I am politically engaged and have less free time available, I will spend my old age there.
