Asja and Marta, Italian volunteers in the heart of Kenya

The story of 2 young people who chose community service in Tabaka

28-10-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

Young Italian men and women volunteers in Kenya represent the real wealth of the interchange between the two countries, their people (with all that this entails: cultures, experiences, human relations, moral values, awareness of life in many of its facets) and the social or service activities involved. It is good and commendable that so many compatriots have the opportunity, for professional, human, scholastic deepening or through community service, to have such an experience.
Malindikenya.net has often told their stories as an example for those who want to approach Africa in another way.
Today through reporter Massimo Gabbani and the Associazione Universitaria per la Cooperazione Internazionale (AUCI), an NGO established in 1978 within the Faculty of Medicine of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, we are going to find out what two Italian girls, Asja and Marta are doing at Tabaka Mission Hospital in the heart of Kenya.
Asjia and Marta have been selected as eligible volunteers to leave for Kenya with AUCI as part of the universal civil service abroad project "White Helmets for the Right to Health." The project has a duration of 12 months: the volunteers entered service on June 27, 2022, and after a period of specific general training, at the end of August they flew to Tabaka where they will serve their year of volunteer service until next June 26, 2023. AUCI has been present in Kenya since 1987, with projects partly funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs involving Embu Hospital, where a nursing training school has been established, St. Camillus Mission Hospital in Karungu, Consolata Hospital in Nkubu, and precisely Tabaka Mission Hospital in Kenya.
In addition to the agreement with the latter facility, aimed at implementing community service projects that allow young volunteers to get to know the reality of Tabaka, AUCI in Kenya works to combat HIV/AIDS and diseases of poverty, promote access to clean water and basic sanitation, and strengthen maternal and child health services.
Asja and Marta's experience, as told by themselves, is below in Malindikenya.net's video service.
