Another 21 Kenyans were found positive for Covid-19 virus in the last 24 hours in the country, bringing the total number of cases to 758.
It was Health Secretary General Mercy Mwangangi who announced the numbers on the pandemic's progress, while Kenya entered the third month since the first recorded case on March 13.
"We are saddened to announce that two more patients have died from the virus," Mwangangi said at the usual afternoon press conference in Afya House, "at the same time we can also salute the recovery of three people who have been discharged in the last 24 hours.
The Secretary General said that from yesterday to today Thursday, May 14, 1486 swabs have been analyzed, bringing the total number of tests carried out in the African country to 36,918.
The new positives are all Kenyan citizens, 14 are male and 7 are women, between 7 and 79 years old.
The 21 come from Mombasa, a good twelve, Nairobi (4) where two deaths were also recorded, bringing the national total to 42, Kajado (the region on the border with Tanzania, the four positives are Kenyan truckers, while another 8 Tanzanians were sent back across the border) and one case from Uasin Gishu County.
Mwangangi expressed concern about emerging cases in land border areas.
"The borders have become the real areas of high risk transmission of Covid-19 - she said - and are now our main areas of intervention, because the risk represented by the entry into Kenya of uncontrolled citizens from other countries is great. We are therefore addressing the communities living in the border counties, asking them to cooperate with the local police, through the establishment of the Nyumba Kumi (a sort of neighborhood watch ed). We should be vigilant and report individuals who use alternative ways to enter the country.
The Secretary General of Health also revealed that every effort is being made to equip all health workers with personal protective equipment. The category also announced a national strike in advance because of this issue for next Monday, May 18, but Mercy Mwangangi believes it can be avoided.
"We know their demands, they are already under discussion," he said, "the government is also preparing the next phase of the pandemic, the one in which we will have to live with the virus for a long time.
