Among the disadvantaged categories of Malindi that the community of stakeholders, i.e. responsible citizens, have decided to help, there are also families living near one of the most problematic and discussed areas of the town, that of the Mayungu dumpsite.
On the initiative of the Kilifi County Chamber of Commerce (KNCCI), which organized the food distribution together with the Red Cross, the Progress Welfare Association of Malindi brought together as usual the local institutions, from the Municipality to the Police Corps with the new OCPD Joe Lekuta, to NEMA, with the representation of the Italian community.
In the village of Timboni, in front of a sheet metal church and mud huts built not far from toxic waste and fumes, kilos of corn flour and beans were delivered, but not without a lesson from each category that participated.
In all this, Police Chief Joe Lekuta recalled the importance of maintaining the containment rules for the Covid-19, which is not dormant at all, not even here on the coast where its presence is least felt. It will unfortunately increase with the opening of the counties and can only be fought by observing the well-known preventive measures. It is important especially in these remote and poor areas that law enforcement agencies show themselves to be close to the people and not only punitive, but educational and protective. Just as it was important that the institutions visited, during the impassable road to the village, the landfill areas that we PWAM activists, lead by Chairperson Kate Mwikali are working to reduce and transform into an eco-sustainable disposal centre where the separation of collection and recycling (as the mayor of Malindi Aliasgar Kassamjee mentioned) will be a reality very soon and where human conditions will have to be re-established, with boundaries and security, because right now it's all out in the open and anyone can go to try to recover from rotting waste, something to trade or use to desperately try to keep lives at the last stage. All this is not human and, even if similar hells arise in many other places around the world, in a destination for other magical and fabulous ways like Malindi, it is even more impressive.
