THE GOOD ITALY IN KENYA
08-10-2023 by redazione
Among the Italian excellences that Italians export to the world and that have conquered Kenya is the art of coffee making. A special tradition, which for once draws not from the fruits of our land, but from the craft of expertly blending qualities of arabica and robusta from the countries where the best coffee is produced.
If the ritual and goodness of Italian coffee first and foremost bring to mind Naples, the one par excellence in Naples is called "Caffè Borbone," and the irrepressible success of this company confirms this, so much so that after conquering the world market (first place overall in sales in 2022 with 3 billion pods and first place in orders on Amazon) it has headed to an exponentially growing market such as the Kenyan and East African markets, with its exclusivist Marco Isaja, of Caffè & More.
It is Marco Isaja himself, a native Neapolitan, who tells us how he and the world of Italian coffee and wine products he represents have landed in Kenya, in the coastal region first and now also in Nairobi.
"I have been working with Borbone for almost ten years," the importer tells us, "I started as an export manager, more out of passion, after many years as a banking executive in South America, Switzerland and Italy. At that time it was a small, well-maintained company in Campania that made 10 million euros a year. We had one shed and one roasting machine. Since 2014 we have increased our turnover by 3000% and we are not stopping anymore. In fact, Caffè Borbone is now the best-selling food product on Amazon and is the first company in the world in the pod sector. We have surpassed, in Italy, even a sacred monster like Nespresso. The honor and burden entrusted to me is to develop, after the successes already achieved in coastal areas, the introduction of Caffè Borbone first of all in the capital and other focal points of Kenya.
What is the secret of Caffè Borbone's success in the world?
"The consistent quality of the product, which means very high reliability for those who use it and for those who offer it to customers. A quality that, despite the large numbers, still undergoes daily checks as when it was a family business, but with very high standards.
How is this quality that never goes down in level achieved?
The controls on the organoleptic characteristics of the product, allow us to recalculate The levels of our blends, sometimes even daily, to propose to our customers always the same result in the cup. Anyone who drinks a Caffè Borbone recognizes this immediately. Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that, in some bars, other coffees are served in the Borbone cups, and the result on the palate becomes unpleasant. Make sure that when you are served coffee in a Borbone cup, the pod is actually Caffè Borbone.
Isaja, is he therefore satisfied with the Borbone effect in Kenya?
"More than satisfied, enthusiastic. The Kenyan economy is growing and with it the middle class, as well as the established middle class. There is a culture of good and at the same time the search for the best value for money, characteristics that belong to the Italian way of proposing its food and wine. Nairobi is also an example for other African cities, personally I do not see in the world, even going back to my experience in other countries, a market so alive and with such potential.
What, in your opinion, are the strengths for the development in Kenya of the ITALIA brand.
The very concept of Italian food and wine must be the main driver. Italian excellence, is not only quality, but also organization, agreements between companies and entrepreneurs who operate seriously and correctly. We must be able to convey the concept of dedication to the customer, precision in delivery, and respect for the environment. For example, Caffè Borbone pods are totally environmentally sustainable, plastic free.
In addition, among The food and wine products, our company has also decided to import some wines.
From the experience of a winning coffee in many respects, Marco Isaja decided to expand his Italian proposal also to selected wines at very interesting prices (from Falanghina from Campania to Chardonnay with Sicilian grapes, to the vintage bubbles of Blanc de Blanc S.Orsola) and also to brands of intensive use and consumption, such as Tavernello.
"Did you know that the sparkling one is the most widely used in spritz bars? - reveals the Neapolitan entrepreneur-it's because of its bubbles and its neutral flavor, with no intrusive aftertaste. And the price is right."
Just as phenomenal is the price of Caffè & More's fall offer for those who want Bourbon quality at home in Kenya: pod machine (also compatible with Nespresso) and supply of the first 50 pods to Kes. 18.500. Better hurry, by calling tel. 0748353075 (also whatsapp).
